Gin Hammond’s inspiring, 28-character solo play, based on the life of Dr. Carolyn Montier, responds to one of life’s most challenging questions: How do you choose between your country, your people, and yourself? Especially when your own country does not consider you worthy of being considered a full citizen? Do you fight for change or do you get out while you can?
When invited to finish her medical degree in Europe, shortly after WWII, Carolyn has to choose between staying in the South (and continuing to risk her life in the fight for Civil Rights), and escaping to Paris to live the life she’s always dreamt of.
A surprisingly comical story, Returning the Bones brings us into intimate contact with the luminaries of the day including President Lyndon B. Johnson, Eleanor Roosevelt, James Baldwin, and Queen Elizabeth, to name a few.
After Belgium, Returning the Bones, (which had the honor of being produced at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles as part of their “Road to Freedom” exhibit), will travel to the United States to begin its month-long run at Book-It Repertory Theater.
